Jonathan David Tward, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology

Jonathan Tward, MD, PhD, a Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) physician and investigator, is an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Utah. He is a member of the multidisciplinary genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and central nervous system teams.

Tward specializes in prostate cancer and other genitourinary malignancies. He is actively engaged in translational, clinical, and outcomes research. His clinical expertise is in delivering intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), as well as low-dose-rate and high-dose-rate brachytherapy.

Tward is also a strong advocate for cancer patients through his annual advocacy efforts in Washington D.C with Utah’s elected federal representatives. Tward is a member of the Data Safety Monitoring committee at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. He is also a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and serves on their congressional relations subcommittee. Tward is also a member of the American Brachytherapy Society, the Utah medical Association, and numerous other medical societies.

Tward earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He earned a PhD in biochemistry and an MD at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Utah, and has completed mini-fellowships awarded by the American Brachytherapy Society in both low-dose rate brachytherapy at the Seattle Prostate Institute and high-dose rate brachytherapy at the Texas Cancer Clinic in San Antonio, Texas. Tward is a board certified member of the American Board of Radiology (Radiation Oncology)

Before joining HCI, Tward served as Founder and CEO of the Multimedia Medical Reference Library, the internet’s first peer-reviewed medical information website, and also served on the Board of Directors for several other e-commerce and health related websites.
