Any serious disease affects the patient’s family and friends. In addition to many of the same emotions experienced by the patient—shock, fear, anger, despair, denial—family and friends must take on increased responsibilities and may be the target of the patient’s anger and frustration. A cancer diagnosis permanently changes family priorities and values, frequently in positive ways. However, if problems are not resolved, they detract from the family’s ability to work together. The most important factors in family relationships are to speak honestly and to let the patient know that family members are there and ready for the patient when needed.
