Jeffrey Botkin, MD, MPH, is a professor of pediatrics, adjunct professor of internal medicine in the Division of Medical Ethics, and associate vice president for research at the University of Utah. He is a member of the DHHS Secretary's Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections and former chair of the Committee on Bioethics for the American Academy of Pediatrics. Botkin is also director of bioethics at Huntsman Cancer Institute.

His research addresses the ethical, legal, and social implications of genetic technology. This work focuses on behavioral and psychological responses to genetic testing for cancer susceptibility, and on issues about informed consent, privacy, and confidentiality. In addition, he is developing standards for research ethics and case consultation.

Botkin received his MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1979 and completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. After earning a master's of public health in preventive medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, he completed a fellowship in the Program in Law, Ethics, and Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in affiliation with the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University.

In addition to his work on cancer-related issues, Botkin has written extensively on ethical and legal issues in prenatal diagnosis and newborn screening.
