Timothy J. Gayowski, MD FRCS FACS

Professor, Department of Surgery

Timothy Gayowski, MD, FRCS (C), FACS, is a professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine and an investigator at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI).

Gayowski has a long clinical and research career specializing in liver and multi-organ transplantation. His areas of special interest have included transplant-related infectious diseases, hepatitis B and C, transplant critical care, and hepatobiliary malignancies. New areas of research at HCI will include studying the genes that may be involved in the development of liver cancer and the broad spectrum of liver diseases found in patients who need liver transplantation.

Gayowski received his medical degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and completed a residency in general surgery at Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals there. He also completed a fellowship in multi-organ transplantation at Children’s Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Before joining HCI, he was the director of the VAMC Pittsburgh Liver Transplant program for 14 years, followed by service as co-director of the Liver Intensive Care Unit at Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
