Randy Jensen, MD, PhD

Associate Professor, Department of Neurosurgery

Randy Jensen MD, PhD, is a member of the brain tumor research team at Huntsman Cancer Institute, an associate professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine, and a physician-researcher specializing in neurosurgical oncology. He treats patients with malignant, benign, primary, and metastatic brain tumors, with a particular emphasis on the treatment of meningiomas (slow-growing, usually benign tumors), metastatic brain tumors, and malignant gliomas (tumors of the central nervous system). Other special interests include preoperative planning and intraoperative mapping techniques for critical tumor-affected areas of the brain to minimize the loss of postoperative neurological function. He has a number of novel clinical trials for treatment of brain tumors.

Jensen's laboratory research concerns investigating how tumor cells are affected by hypoxia (not enough oxygen and blood supply) and how these tumor cells communicate to create their own blood vessels, which facilitates the tumor growth process. Understanding how cells communicate may lead to the development of intervention methods to stunt tumor cell growth and blood supply.

Jensen received his medical degree at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He completed a neurological residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago and went on to complete his PhD in the Neuroscience Program at Loyola University Graduate School. He is a member of a number of professional societies with a special interest in brain tumors.
